PROCESS

Inspiration & Ideation

Treatise by Cornelius Cardew is a 193 page hand drawn graphic score that broke all conventional music barriers. Composed between 1963 and 1967, the score is made up of basic lines, geometric shapes and abstract symbols that both look like and reshape musical notation. Because there’s no set instructions, Treatise gives experimental musicians the freedom to interpret the work in whatever way they want.

It follows a linear structure and simply has 193 pages that are the smallest unit of the book. The pages can be read in succession or rearranged to make unique compositions that can be interpreted in infinite ways. I’m sure you all remember the piercing sound the interpretations of treatise sound like but let’s take another look!

This realization of Treatise is an interpretation by the Russian ensemble KYMATIC.

Melo was born out of the experimental nature of Treatise, which juxtaposes graphical forms with melodious harmonies, creating the perfect blend of visually appealing visuals and guided meditation harmonies. Designed to enhance focus during meditation, Melo is a mental health app-based solution that caters to visual learners and creatives. Inspired by Cornelius Cardew’s Treatise ensemble, Melo’s unconventional approach to meditation gives users the freedom to interpret their daily meditation in their individualistic way, while creating their own symphonies. The app is based on Treatise, Cornelius Cardew’s 193-page hand-drawn graphic score that broke all conventional music barriers. Besides being user-friendly, Melo amalgamates the world of highly visualistic and calming graphics with music, creating a plethora of beautiful possibilities while enhancing meditation and promoting good mental health.

User Persona

Leo is a 21-year-old visual communication design student who is passionate about graphic design and has a profound ear for music, particularly symphonies. Although Leo’s transition from online school back to in-person has caused him tremendous anxiety and negatively affected his performance at university, he remains determined to succeed. Leo was recently diagnosed with ADHD, which has made it challenging for him to focus in class. Despite his short attention span, Leo is a visual learner who resorts to music when he feels anxious. He is interested in exploring the intersection of design and music holistically. Leo’s co-curricular professor recommended the Treatise app, which provides a beautiful world of graphics and music that celebrates meditation and induces relaxation. Inspired by Cardew’s scores, which every musician grew up learning about, Leo was drawn towards learning more about it and downloaded the app right away.

Initial Wireframes

Originally, in order for an individual to create a meditative experience in Melo, he/she had to go through a multiple screens & steps.

User Testing

After conducting user testing, we were able to gain valuable insights from our colleagues’ feedback. As a result, we implemented several significant changes to our UI/UX design project. These changes included:

  • Eliminating lengthy introductory surveys and login requirements
  • Streamlining the home page to allow for all actions to be performed in one place
  • Incorporating a sleek dark mode design to reduce harsh graphics and colors
  • Simplifying navigation by reducing the number of buttons
  • Enhancing organization for a more efficient and compact experience.
